Is Chiropractic Care Safe After Spinal Treatment Or Surgery?

Make sure you know what is safe and what is not.

Undergoing back, neck or spinal surgery in general can be painful, and the postoperative pain can still be felt days after the surgery. Postoperative pain happens in 80% of patients who undergo surgery, and 88% of these patients report moderate, severe, or extreme pain, according to the US Institute of Medicine.

When post-surgery therapies such as chiropractic care, exercise, and back surgery are combined they are effective in treating underlying conditions. Chiropractic treatment, when administered by a qualified doctor of chiropractic, can significantly reduce many forms of back, neck, or joint discomfort. A skilled and experienced chiropractor will be able to provide safe and effective treatment and will also be able to advise you on any precautions you should take going forward.

Timing is key when having post-surgical chiropractic care. We always recommend waiting until you are released by your medical provider to care in a chiropractic clinic. Many spinal or regenerative surgical procedures require a certain amount of time for recovery and healing.

If you go to the chiropractor for bone popping without allowing your body time to heal, you are gambling to an extent. That doesn’t mean you can’t be helped by a knowledgeable chiropractor. Chiropractic isn’t ONLY spinal manipulative therapy. Chiropractors are well-versed in exercise rehabilitation, strengthening, and function, cold laser, and other effective therapies that may speed up the healing process.

When Is It Safe to Start?

It’s important to allow your body time to heal and recover, therefore six months is the recommended time before receiving any type of chiropractic care.

For example, it takes at least three months following spinal fusion surgery for the vertebrae to fuse and form an immobilized graft. For your muscles to recover you will need to have physical therapy for a few months.

There are differences in everyone's healing process therefore speak with your surgeon before beginning chiropractic treatment.

Benefits of seeing a chiropractic physician after surgery

After surgery, back, joint, and neck pain can be greatly reduced by spinal adjustments or manipulations. Chiropractic doctors are skilled in manipulations, and they are typically experienced in treating patients who have had surgery, which can help ease pain. To help with the therapy, your doctor may employ tools and manual manipulations. Improvements in joint mobility, nerve transmission, and general wellness can come all from chiropractic therapy.

Possible Risks of Chiropractic Care After Back Surgery

By permanently joining two or more vertebrae in your spine, a procedure known as spinal fusion, all mobility between the fused vertebrae is eliminated. The vertebrae unite into a single solid structure after healing.

You don’t want chiropractors putting any force into the area above or below until it’s fully healed. Your chiropractor is usually well-trained and knows this but it’s always good to just say it so that you know it as well.

If you’ve had surgery, you’re all healed up and released by your medical provider, but you’re still having some issues, don’t be afraid to see us. We have been seeing patients with healed-up spinal surgeries for over 2 decades. It can help you feel better from day to day and help you stay in the game.
