Do I need to be flexible?
Yoga is about so much more than your flexibility. Certainly in the initial stages of your yoga journey. Although yoga will help you with your flexibility, it also focuses on strength, balance, and meditation. Actually, although you are in a class, the instructor likely makes modifications for each person attending. When the instructor calls for a pose that you are not flexible enough to achieve, there is usually a modification for the pose.
Do I need to be young or athletically active to practice yoga?
Absolutely not. Yoga can be implemented at any point in your life. As with any workout regimen, practicing a little bit each week can create big differences regardless of your level of fitness.
Is yoga just for women?
It is estimated that yoga classes are made up of 60% to 70% females. This is possibly due to a preconceived notion that yoga is made up of impossible-to-achieve contortions and strictly relaxation techniques. But, yoga is literally whatever you make it. You can take different styles and different classes that fit your goals and your personal idea of what you need to yoga to be for you.
What do I wear?
Yoga pants are on trend right now so for women it’s not hard to find a pair of yoga pants anywhere. You can find them in many colors, though I prefer black. Yoga pants are either tight or loose at the ankle it’s just your preference. Sometimes I wear biker shorts to yoga but I don’t get that friction from the fabric on my legs making it a little harder to get in certain positions.
For females, if you are going to wear a loose shirt I suggest wearing a camisole underneath if you don’t feel like revealing anything underneath your shirt. If you do, that’s okay too! Generally tighter clothing doesn’t get in your way as much while moving through various positions.
Males, a tee shirt or tank and gym shorts or gym pants work just fine!
Are people looking at my butt?
No! Everyone is too concentrated on figuring out the next move! If you are worried about this, sit in the back of class and make sure you wear a thicker pair of pants that aren’t see-thru!
Do I need to sign up or call before class?
You really should for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that we provide all yoga equipment for the first 6 attendees. You want to make sure that you have yours reserved for your session. The next reason is so that we know how many to count on being there. If we need to make more space prior to the class, RSVP’ing will help us.
Why are doctors starting to recommend yoga classes to their patients?
Research every year is showing how yoga can help people of all ages become healthier. This includes easing and eliminating back pain, helping with neck pain, easing shoulder pain, as well as lowering blood pressure. There are some studies showing that yoga improves digestion and helps with arthritis as well as lessening symptoms of depression and anxiety. A good dose of yoga is at least twice per week.
Is there such a thing as yoga etiquette?
There are a few things to keep in mind when attending a yoga class. One is to remove your shoes before you enter the yoga room. If possible, try to show up for the class. With relaxation being a part of yoga, it’s best if there are no attendees coming in in the middle of class. If you need to leave early, please do so before the final relaxation pose so that others can finish up class with a good experience.
