Chiropractor In Amarillo Weighs In On Reasons For Acupuncture

"Acupuncture is holistic healthcare that comes from Chinese Medicine protocols and acupuncture in Amarillo is offered here at Creek Stone" says Jeff Williams, chiropractor in Amarillo.

Acupuncture appears to have originated in China over 2,500 years ago.
The most basic explanation is that the acupuncturist can stimulate pre-determined points on the body by inserting very thin needles. In most cases, they cannot even be felt. That’s how thin the needles really are. In fact, rather than being a painful process as one may imagine, acupuncture is commonly used as a pain REDUCTION, believe it or not.

Following the emergence of key research in the last 5-10 years, Acupuncture has begun to gain in popularity throughout the US. The research papers showed the effectiveness of acupuncture in various conditions such as chronic pain, headaches & migraines, and stress and tension reduction.

The US Department of Health and Human Services stated the following:

“… promising results have emerged showing the efficacy of acupuncture in adult postoperative and chemotherapy nausea and vomiting, and in postoperative dental pain. There are other situations such as addiction, stroke rehabilitation, headache, menstrual cramps, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, osteoarthritis, low back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and asthma, in which acupuncture may be useful as an adjunct treatment.”

That’s from the government!

When we dive further into the benefits of acupuncture, it looks like this:

Chronic pain. Chronic pain can be defined as pain lasting longer than 3 months. That’s really not that long when you think about it. Especially when your culture teaches you to toughen up or that the pain will go away if you just outlast it. Before you know it, time gets away and you are well-beyond the 3-month mark. Chronic pain is harder to deal with. The train you are asking practitioners to push back up the hill is much heavier at that point. Acupuncture, massage, and chiropractic care have been shown to be effective against particularly pesky chronic pain conditions.

Headaches and Migraines: research has shown that acupuncture may be a very effective form of treatment for chronic, tension-type headaches. The research project was performed by the University of Munich and was published back in 2009.
Insomnia: Also in 2009, a study came out from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine showing acupuncture could decrease episodes of insomnia vs. no treatment at all.

Cancer and Chemotherapy Complementary Treatment:

The National Cancer Institute points to several studies suggesting acupuncture helps improve immunity and can speed up the patients’ recovery process. In addition, these patients reported lower pain scores.

  • Mood: Acupuncture has been shown to help boost one’s mood. When done once weekly, acupuncture may help with depression by stimulating “happy” neurotransmitters in the brain.
  • Heart: While acupuncture doesn’t affect heart health directly to our knowledge, it does affect stress and tension, which in turn absolutely affects heart health. Reduce stress and tension through acupuncture and you improve heart health.
  • Chronic and Acute Low Back Pain: The American College of Physicians and the American Medical Association updated their recommendations in 2017 recommending Chiropractic, Acupuncture, and Massage as first-line treatments for acute and chronic low back pain. Before even taking over-the-counter medication such as aspirin, Tylenol, or Ibuprofen. That’s big!

As you can see, Acupuncture in Amarillo has a lot going for it and a lot of momentum right now. And it’s not only hype. It’s based on things like research, government recommendations, effectiveness, and safety. Remember this, “Patients are entitled to the best treatment causing the least harm.” Acupuncture certainly fits the bill in that regard.
