What Type Of Mattress Should I Get? A Chiropractor In Amarillo Weighs In

When it comes to common questions asked in a chiropractic office, I would say that the question of which mattress is the best mattress comes in near the top spot. I think that is for a couple of reasons.

The first reason is that chiropractors are experts on the back, the neck, and spine pain so it makes sense to ask a chiropractor what mattress you should purchase. The second reason is that mattresses are no small transactions. Some of them are quite expensive and people do not want to simply throw their money away on something that could help their chronic pain or could potentially go the other way and actually make their pain even worse.

I would say that while chiropractors are typically experts on back and neck pain, few of us chiropractors hold any specialty in mattress selection. We do not have a ‘mattress selection’ class in school. As much as I get asked that question though, it may be a great addition to the chiropractic curriculum.

So which mattress is best?

Here is what I can share with you; they quit making water beds for a reason. Super soft mattresses with no support are not good for your back in the long term. You need that support to help keep your spine nice and straight as you sleep and rest.

On the other hand, nobody I am aware of likes to sleep on a rock. Getting a hard mattress makes no sense to me conceptually. They are not comfortable and where a soft mattress affords no support, the hard mattress has no ‘give’ to it so you will have compensations in your spine as you try to relax or rest.

The best recommendation I have come up with over the years of learning is to simply get something in the middle. Not too hard - Not too soft. Nice and supportive but not uncomfortable.

Luckily with such a substantial purchase, many times companies are offering a 30-day money-back guarantee. I have even seen 90-day money-back guarantees.

Mattress Brands

So that I do not leave you completely empty-handed, I will give you three suggestions that I have heard patients raving about over the years. That way, maybe I can help you narrow down your search and maybe even keep you out of the chiropractor’s office.

  1. Simmons Beautyrest - This is actually the mattress that I own and sleep on every night. It has been a great mattress for us and I have no complaints whatsoever.
  2. Sleep Number - Sleep Number beds are pricey. That is the most common gripe I hear from patients but, you can make them whatever you need them to be. If it is too soft, raise your number and it becomes harder and vice versa. There is a lot of freedom in knowing that regardless of price, you’ll be able to eventually get what you want.
  3. Sealy Posturepedic - Again, I do not own this bed but my patients have been pleased with it through the years.

So there you have it. That is the extent of my knowledge on choosing a good mattress. I hope this has been of some assistance to you in your search for the perfect fit and here’s  a little Pro Tip for you. Don’t forget, if you are an ongoing patient of Creek Stone Integrated Care and your back pain is lingering, there are certain cases where I will write a script for the mattress that relieves my patients from paying any taxes that would normally be charged for the mattress.
