Bad Balance & Worried About Falling? Our Training Can Keep You Upright!

Balance training and fall risk reduction in Amarillo, TX just got advanced!

One of the biggest things we worry about as we age, or as our parents age, is falling. In fact more than one in four people older than 65 fall each year according to the National Institute on Agin. The older we get, the worse falls are and the harder it is to recover from them 100%.

Falls can be an absolute life-changing event in some cases. For example, a fall that results in a broken hip and replacement can be a major, life changing event. Not only that but the hip replacement fixes the hip but isn't typically going to fix the balance issue and reduce the risk of a future fall.

That's where Creek Stone Integrated Medical can step in and help. Our integrated medical and alternative healthcare clinic has state of the art technology to make balance training a game. A game that is fun and enjoyable rather than tiring, boring, and miserable.

Before we get to the fun and exciting stuff, some of the reasons a person can have a greater risk of falling can be things like:

  1. Overall weakness or deconditioning. Muscles can be a use it or lose it thing.
  2. Chronic illnesses like diabetes, radiculopathies, and heart disease
  3. Unbalanced medications
  4. Poor vision
  5. Poor reflexes
  6. Foot problems
  7. Age-related cognitive issues
  8. Chronic pain

When you go down through this list, you may notice that there are clearly some things we do not address here at Creek Stone. However, we can potentially help 6 of the 8 that are listed. So let's talk about them.

Having a medical services here at Creek Stone allows us the ability to provide you with a medical exam as well as an orthopedic exam from a board certified orthopedic specialist.

That means our medical provider is able to evaluate your blood pressure, your vision and hearing, your cardiac function, and your medications to see if any of these issues might be causing some of the fall risk issues. Not only that but our medical provider can help with the management of chronic illnesses like diabetes, heart issues, and more.

Beyond conditions requiring medical management, our orthopedic specialist can offer the rehabilitation aspect of your treatment. Starting with the state of the art ISO Free balance trainer. You can see it at this link https://www.tecnobody.com/en/products/detail/iso-free

As you can see from the link, the support base of the ISO-Free is a sensorized platform with four load cells able to detect in real time the distribution of the loads on the ground of our patient. This is a sensitive stabilometric platform certified Class 1 Medical Device that intuitively separates the right and left and the front to the back parts for correct evaluation of the patient's CENTER OF BALANCE.

We start by safely training balance with a spotter. Balance is trained on the ISO Free through games! This makes our patients' training FUN and enjoyable while making progress. You can beat your own (or others') records and watch your balance improve week after week.

Not only does the ISO Free train balance through games, but it can also evaluate our patients' progress as we go along through its BESS and mCTSIB testing protocols. This stuff is AMAZING, folks.

BESS stands for Balance Error Scoring System. It can track your balance improvement following concussions and it can track our improvement and training effectiveness over time.

The mCTSIB stands for Modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction in Balance. The mCTSIB testing allows providers like us to quantify postural control under various sensory conditions. This also helps us evaluate the progress of our treatment.

That is not where our balance training and fall prevention ends though. We also use the ToePro trainer in our program. The ToePro  foot exercise platform has been designed to improve performance and balance by strengthening muscles of the foot and leg in their lengthened positions. Compared to conventional exercises, exercising lengthened muscles produces nearly fourfold increases in strength.

The ToePro Foot Exercise Device is incredibly useful for the prevention of falls in the elderly because research revealed that every 1% increase in force generated beneath the big toe decreases a senior's risk of falling by 7%. That's incredible!

Just think how much stronger our patients are after training for just 2-4 weeks with the ToePro.

Once the patient is progressed to a point they are comfortable and confident with it, we can progress to the Bosu ball, which is a balance trainer, providing the user with an unstable surface on which to perform exercises that engage a variety of muscles. You can find Bosu balls at many gyms and physical therapy offices. The problem is that many of our older patients just cannot start balance training with a Bosu ball. That wouldn't be safe in many instances. However, the ISO Free system is a safe way to start training balance in this population.

So, if you or a loved one needs to get better balance or positional sense so they can improve balance and are ready to engage in serious fall prevention, call us at 806-355-3000 and let's get started ASAP.

We can make a difference safely and steadily to help our patients re-engage in life comfortably and confidently.
